CCISD News: 2004 Math TAKS Scores Impact Rating of CCISD High Schools

By Marilyn Clark, League City Area News Online

October 6, 2004

The Texas Education Agency, TEA, just implemented a new accountability system for Texas schools. The new system led to a lowering of the rating of a number of schools throughout the state of Texas, including Clear Lake High School and Clear Brook High School. Bucking this trend, Clear Creek High School held onto its Recognized rating.

TEA says that most Texas schools are still performing well academically and that the drop in ratings at many schools is simply the result of tougher TEA standards.

New TEA Rating System

The TEA rated schools in all TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) subject areas: Reading/English Language Arts, Writing, Social Studies, Math and Science. Special education students and students who have limited English skills are included in the rating system.

The TEA evaluated the scores of four student sub-populations: African-American, hispanic, white and economically disadvantaged. The TEA set a minimum score floor that requires that 70% of students meet the TAKS standards for all subject areas and sub-populations. A floor of 65% is allowed if students meet required improvement conditions.

The TEA also set requirements for the rate of student high school completion and the rate of dropout.

High School Subpopulations Challenged by the Math TAKS

According to the TEA web site, a higher percentage of students in all sub-populations met the minimum math standard at Clear Creek High School for 2004 than in 2003. In addition, Clear Creek High School met its required math improvement goal for two sub-populations.

While the math scores of all sub-populations improved for Clear Lake High School, it was not enough to earn a Recognized rating. In addition, Clear Lake High School did not meet its required math improvement goal for one sub-population.

At Clear Brook High School, the percent of students meeting the minimum math standard for two sub-populations was below 70%. Furthermore, these two sub-populations experienced a drop in the percent of students meeting the minimum math standard. See the tables below.
