Mother’s Day

League City News - League City Methodist Church Picture“Heavy hangs the head that wears the crown.” But no wonder. Besides awesome responsibilities of the kingdom, the ancient monarchs had to balance a heavy crown of gold and silver laden with jewels. Crown jewels were safer kept in view on royal heads. Pound for pound, jewels are still among the most valued of treasures today. Is anything more precious? The Bible declares a virtuous woman to be so: “She is far more precious than jewels.” With regard to this woman, “Her children rise up and call her blessed.”

Mother’s Day is a reminder on the calendar for children to remember in a special way that lovely lady who gave them life. As one harried mother explained, “I delivered each child once in birth and I have been delivering them ever since…to school, ballgames, dance lessons, parties and everywhere. I’m just a delivery service.”

One mother was encouraged when her children insisted she not lift a finger all day long on her holiday. They would cook for her. And they did. They used three pots, two frying pans, a double-boiler, three mixing bowls, a chopping board, six measuring spoons, and who knows how many dishes. Mom was delighted. She complimented them that she had never tasted better Jello. That mother is a precious jewel. Her children will always hold her precious because she saw value and worth in them.

Late in the life of the great English statesman, Winston Churchill, a London editor compiled a list of special teachers who claimed to have influenced Churchill during his youth. Thinking this might be a good feature story the editor submitted the list to Churchill for verification. Churchill returned the list with only one comment: “You have omitted to mention the greatest of my teachers…my mother.”

Ponder this: Mothers may not always be perfect but they are always precious.
