Religion: A Pastor PondersFreedomby Pastor William Jenkins Submitted for July 1, 2005
In a letter to his wife , Abigail, dated July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote: “Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be, decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony, ‘that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent’.” Thus began the great experiment of democracy on America. While the decision to be free was unanimous, there was no escaping the awesome responsibility attached to it. Freedom always demands responsibility to those values that insure it. In voting to be free the colonial fathers bound themselves to the requirements of freedom, requirements which under different circumstances they would not choose. Those requirements of freedom cost many of them their fortunes and their lives.
