Police Beat: League City Officers heading to Louisiana to assist with search and rescue efforts

Four more League City Officers will leave to assist with the search and rescue of storm and flood victims in New Orleans. These four officers will link up with two League City Officers already in New Orleans.

Sgt. Dan Krieger, who arrived in New Orleans yesterday morning, said, “Whatever you see on TV, it is really a hundred times worse.” Because of the lack of a strong law enforcement and/or military presence, Sgt. Krieger and Officer Williamson provided security for Houston Firefighters operating their rescue boat in the flooded city.

The Sgt. Krieger and Officer Williamson will be joined by:

Lt. Charles Slade
Sgt. David Hausam
Officer Recie Tisdale
Officer Gary Yates

These four officers are taking enough supplies to make them self sufficient. Food, water, and other items for victims and officers were donated by the Wal-Mart in Kemah and other supplies and equipment have been donated by Pro-Defense, Academy, Auto Zone, and Baygas Propane.

Additionally, the officers are driving a small city-owned fuel truck for our vehicles and rescue boat.

Several other officers volunteered to travel to New Orleans and lend a hand but the department could spare only four more officers.

On August 30, 2005, Crime Prevention Officer Kelly Williamson was watching the Fox News Channel when he heard an appeal for help. A reporter covering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina commented that authorities would welcome any and all assistance provided by other law enforcement agencies willing to assist with the recovery efforts.

Officer Williamson was joined in his office by Sgt. Dan Krieger who is an experienced paramedic and Officer Recie Tisdale. Officer Williamson said that he would be willing to travel to Louisiana and both officers quickly jumped on board with the idea.

Officer Williamson then contacted a representative of FEMA to coordinate the assistance of the League City Police Department’s Marine Unit. Chief Andrew Daniel approved the plan and the officers began loading LCPD equipment into a department SUV and preparing the Marine Division’s 20’ rescue boat for this evening’s trip.

The three League City Officers will drive to New Orleans and remain in Louisiana until they are no longer needed. “We are glad we can help out. The hurricane season is not over yet and we may find ourselves in the same situation,” said Chief Daniel.
