Cornyn Highlighted Importance Of Ellington Field Military Operations

Cornyn addressed efforts to establish a Joint Reserve Base at Ellington Field and the critical role the base plays in our nation’s homeland security efforts.

Government - Senator Cornyn pictureWASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities came to Ellington Field on Monday, May 2 to discuss local efforts to establish a Joint Reserve Base at Ellington.

The work is being headed up by the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership – Ellington Field Task Force (EFTF). Cornyn and White also highlighted the critical role the base plays in the nation’s homeland security efforts.

Sen. Cornyn was briefed by Colonel Lanny B. McNeely, Wing Commander of the 147th Fighter Wing, Texas Air National Guard. Also on hand were representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Houston, the 149th Aviation Brigade Texas Army National Guard, and the Army, Navy and Marine reserve units that are moving their operations to Ellington Field from their current location south of the Texas Medical Center.

Sen. Cornyn has met with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other top military officials on several occasions to highlight the many benefits of Texas military facilities and urge returning more troops to the state. He has traveled to all major military installations in Texas and meets regularly with community groups from military areas in Texas and Washington. In addition to chairing the Emerging Threats and Capabilities subcommittee, Cornyn serves on the Readiness and Management Support, and Strategic Forces subcommittees.
