Cornyn, McCaul To Discuss Security At Port Of Houston

Will Highlight Efforts to Improve Port Security

Government - Senator Cornyn pictureWASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chairman of the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will be in Houston on Thursday, March 31 to receive a briefing and update on security from officials at the Port of Houston. Cornyn and McCaul will emphasize the need to improve port security.

Sens. Cornyn and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) plan to introduce legislation in the Senate to bolster port security by better allocating homeland security funding. The legislation was guided by 9/11 Commission recommendations that homeland security assistance should be based on an assessment of risks and vulnerabilities. Cornyn and Feinstein expect to introduce the bill soon after the Senate returns in April.

Among the officials expected to be on hand for the briefing are U.S. Attorney Michael Shelby; U.S. Coast Guard Captain Richard M. Kaser; PHA Chairman Jim Edmonds, Commissioners, and Staff; Executives from the ports of Galveston, Freeport and Texas City.

Within the Armed Services Committee, Sen. Cornyn is also a member of the Readiness and Management Support and Strategic Forces subcommittees. He chairs the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship subcommittee.
